Mosquito Control Vs. Pollinators
If you’ve ever swatted a mosquito a second too late to prevent a bite, then you’ve probably wondered why mosquitoes exist. When no benefit came to mind, it’s likely that you started pondering the pros and cons of mosquito control. Removing mosquitoes from your vicinity is an obvious advantage. After all, their bites are uncomfortable and can spread several unpleasant diseases. However, not all bugs are bad neighbors. In fact, some are important. What impact does mosquito control have on pollinators?
Pollinators: Insects With a Purpose
While not everyone is a fan of honeybees and other pollinators, most people understand that they play a crucial role in the environment. If they weren’t around to pollinate plants, gardens would be without flowers, farmers would be facing failing crops, and grocery shoppers hunting for their favorite fruits and vegetables would likely find bare shelves instead.
Mosquito Control’s Impact on Pollinators
Fortunately, scientists have determined that properly delivered mosquito control does not harm honeybees. Researchers in the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center’s Department of Entomology conducted a three-part study to evaluate the impact of pesticides on honeybees. After determining the toxicity levels of specific insecticides for bees in the lab, they ran semi-field experiments to see if bees were likely to receive a fatal exposure in the real world. When mosquito trucks sprayed popular mosquito control pesticides at the highest concentration used, bees caged as little as 50 feet away survived. In addition, researchers examined the populations of local beekeeper’s hives, comparing those in areas where mosquito control was used with those where it was not. They found no difference in the mortality rates or the stress levels of the two groups.
Safe, Effective Mosquito Control
How can mosquito control be both deadly for mosquitoes and safe for pollinators? In part, it’s a matter of susceptibility. Mosquitoes are 100 times more vulnerable to these chemicals than bees are. In addition, mosquito control professionals specifically target mosquitoes; the products they rely on use small amounts of pesticides, and the chemicals break down in a matter of hours.
