Alabama gets some of the best weather during the summer months but residents have to be on their guard because they’re not the only ones enjoying the sun; the mosquitoes are as well. Here are five skin-tingling facts about mosquitoes that live in your area.
1. They Like Yards
Mosquitoes are attracted to yards because there is often everything they need to thrive in such an environment. Any wet area in your yard could be the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes because the females lay their eggs in standing water or damp soil.
2. Mass Reproduction
A female mosquito can produce around 200 eggs from one satisfying feeding session. If she gets the opportunity to suck blood until her abdomen is so full that it more than doubles in size, she can lay approximately 200 eggs a few days later. Then, in just over a week these eggs emerge into hungry mosquitoes.
3. Sixty Different Types of Mosquitoes
There are approximately sixty types of mosquitoes that live in Alabama, but the ones that you really have to watch out for are the Japanese encephalitis mosquito, southern house mosquito, and the Asian tiger mosquito. All three are known to carry and transmit dangerous diseases.
4. Home to the Asian Tiger Mosquito
These mosquitoes have only been in the Alabama area for around thirty years. It is believed that they came from Asia on ships carrying used tires. The problem with this kind of mosquito is that it can carry multiple diseases and it prefers suburban areas to uninhabited woodland.
5. Disease Carriers
The word mosquito is often synonymous with the disease Malaria, but this isn’t the only disease that they transmit. In the Alabama area alone, mosquitoes could also potentially transmit Zika Virus, West Nile virus, Dengue Fever, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and Chikungunya. In fact, it’s estimated that the transmission of these diseases is going to increase due to tourists either visiting or returning from countries that are badly affected by these diseases.
